About the Aquaculture Register
Last updated: 10 July 2026.
The Aquaculture Register was established in 2006 and is an asset-based register. This means that the register is structured according to the licences, with each licence constituting a separate entity in the register.
The register contains a list of aquaculture licences and certain significant administrative decisions relating to them, as well as an overview of transfers, mortgages and other rights that are officially registered against the licences.
The register consists of two components: an administrative component and a legal registration component. The Directorate of Fisheries is responsible for the administrative part of the register, including the issuance of aquaculture licences and the registration of licence information (such as licence type, locality and licence number etc.). The Brønnøysund Register Centre is responsible for the legal registration of transfers and mortgages relating to aquaculture licences. This registration establishes legal protection against third parties.
Public information
The information registered in the Aquaculture Register is, as a general rule, publicly available. Anyone may access registered information, provided that they supply one of the following identifiers: licence number, national identity number or organisation number.
The public availability of this information reflects the purpose of the registration system: to provide legal protection for encumbrances and rights through public disclosure.
