License hunting

License hunting involves the use of lethal control to kill a specific number of individual of a given wildlife species motivated by the desire to reduce conflict or depredation. It is authorised under § 12 of the Game law, and the quota is set by the responsible government management agency. It is a requirement that hunters are registered as “license hunters” in the Hunter’s register. Registration is made for each large carnivore species, for each separate hunting year. This implies that registration must be renewed each year and repeated for each species that you wish to hunt. Registration is free.

To be registered as a license hunter you must;

  • be at least 18 years old
  • have paid your hunting license fee for the hunting year 2009/2010, and the payment must be registered in the Hunter’s register
  • have fulfilled your reporting requirements in accordance with the regulation of 18th March 2005 on management of large carnivores § 16

A receipt of your resgistration as a license hunter must be carried while you are hunting. License hunters that are hunting with a rifle must also carry current proof that they have passed the big game shooting test. Persons resident outside Norway do not need to take the big game shooting test in Norway if they have fulfilled the requirements for hunting big game in their country of residence. Proof of this must be carried while hunting.

There is no need to report about hunting activity, but all shot animals must be reported.
