Building on tradition

Director General Erik Fossum

The Brønnøysund Register Centre is an administrative agency responsible for a number of national control and registration schemes for business and industry. The overarching aim of the centre is to improve the conditions for financial security and efficiency for business and industry, and the public at large.

Originated in the Viking era

Though a young institution, the Brønnøysund Register Centre nevertheless embodies traditions dating back many centuries. The registration of deeds and titles originated in the Viking era where important news was announced when all free men were assembled for the Ting, the general assembly. While the framework and the technology was of course very different from what we have today, the purpose of registration was the same - to announce the establishment of a legal relationship in public. The approval and announcement of business names and business enterprises also has a long tradition in Norway. The system used for the last 125 years is in principle much the same as what we use today.

Service Center for Business and Industry

At the Brønnøysund Register Centre we are acutely aware of our social responsibilities, both as a necessary regulatory body and executive authority, but even more so as a useful service for business and industry.

More and more countries find it necessary to ease the workload companies have due to their obligations to report to the public authorities. For this reason they have decided to use our Central Coordinating Register for Legal Entities and our Register of the Reporting Obligations of Enterprises as models. The Brønnøysund Register Centre is among the world leaders when it comes to register operations, a position we intend to keep.

Coordination

The Brønnøysund Register Centre performs an important task by coordinating the reporting obligations of business and industry. The aim is to prevent superfluous collection and registration of information, which will especially alleviate the workload for small and medium-sized businesses. The Register of the Reporting Obligations of Enterprises catalogues the information the various registers and public bodies require from business operators and compares the forms issued by the various bodies. If two or more public authorities or agencies ask the same type of questions of the same type of companies, these bodies must cooperate so that their questions are asked only once. The Act relating to the Register of Reporting Obligations stipulates that the public authorities and agencies must cooperate.

Central Source of Information

Registration and reporting are not only burdens, they yield positive effects as well. The Brønnøysund Register Centre is one of Norway's largest electronic database centres and thus a useful source of information for many people. Most of us have at one point or another been in contact with the Brønnøysund Register Centre. Whether you are a business manager, a lender, a used car buyer, a journalist or a regular citizen, you have access to much of the information stored at the Brønnøysund Register Centre.

Different Registers

Many people are not aware that the Brønnøysund Register Centre comprises a number of different state electronic registers. The major ones are the Register of Mortgaged Moveable Property, the Register of Business Enterprises, the Central Coordinating Register for Legal Entities, the Register of Company Accounts, the Register of Bankruptcies and the Register of Marriage Settlements.

In addition to the registers, we operate the National Fee Collection Office which is in charge of all the accounting and invoicing in connection with enforcement proceedings. The National Fee Collection Office also administers The Norwegian Register of Hunters for the Directorate for Nature Management, a register of licensed game hunters in Norway.

Thousands of Enquiries

Sophisticated computer and information technology enables speedy registration and updating of all information in the registers, and allows rapid retrieval of information to answer your enquiries.

Each working day the Brønnøysund Register Centre answers thousands of enquiries over the telephone and the Automatic Computer-Linked Phone, the Brønnøysund fax and through our on-line services. New technology will make it even simpler in the future to satisfy your reporting obligations and use the Brønnøysund Register Centre as your central source of information.
