About the Register of Marriage Settlements
Last updated: 28 July 2026.
The Register of Marriage Settlements is a register for the official registration of agreements between spouses, which regulate assets/property in a different way than what is automatically regulated by law.
If one of the spouses gives the other a gift, the spouses will typically have to create a marriage settlement and register this in the Register of Marriage Settlements for it to have legal protection towards possible creditors.
If the marriage settlement includes transfers of real estate, it must in addition be registered with Kartverket in order to have legal protection toward third parties. The spouses must make sure to have this registered in Kartverket.
The same rules apply for registered partners.
Public information
The information registered in the Register of Marriage Settlements is, as a general rule, available to the public. This means that anyone can have access to the information, normally provided that the national identity number of one of the spouses is stated.
Public access to the information is an important part of official registration, since liens and rights must be known to third parties in order to obtain legal protection.
The Register of Marriage Settlements contains registered marriage settlements from 1928 to the present day. You can find marriage settlements registered later than 1981 in our service by searching using the national identity number of one of the parties. To obtain information about marriage settlements registered prior to 1981 you must contact us, and state the full name, address and birth date of one of the parties.
