Religious and faith communities
Last updated: 17 December 2025.
The Brønnøysund Register Centre is responsible for checking membership lists from religious and faith communities that apply for government funding.
Every year, these communities, except the Church of Norway, send us lists of national identity numbers for the members they are applying funding for, as set out in the Act relating to religious communities, etc. We compare these lists with the National Population Register, the Church of Norway’s register of members, and other registered religious and faith communities. The purpose of this check is to make sure the government funding is calculated correctly.
We update this information once a year. It does not include ongoing registrations or removals.
View your information on My page
You can see which religious or faith communities you are registered with by logging in to My page. You can also call us to request information showing whether you are registered as a member of one or more communities. Children aged 15 or over must request access themselves. They can log in to My page or call us to get their information.
Children under the age of 15
To access membership information for your child under 15, call us on 75 00 75 00 between 9am and 12pm on weekdays. We will then send the information by post to the child’s registered address.
Joining or leaving a religious or faith community must be done through the community itself
If you want to join or leave a religious or faith community, you must contact the community directly. The same applies if you believe you have been registered by mistake. We do not process registrations or removals on behalf of these communities.
