Industrial codes
Last updated: 29 August 2025.
The industrial code is a five digit code indicating the organisation’s main activity.
An example of an industrial code is «55.100 Hotels and similar accomodation».
Registration of industrial code
The Central Coordinating Register for Legal Entities registers an industrial code when an organisation is registered.
Most organisations will only have one industrial code, and this must indicate the organisation’s main activity. Some organisations can have several industrial codes, for instance those that have several sub-entities with different activities.
New companies doing investements/holding activity will be registered with industrial code 00.000 Unknown. This is a valid industrial code. It can take 2-3 years before the organisation is assigned a more specific code.
Changing the industrial code
You have to update the description of the activity if you think the industrial code is incorrect. You do this in the form Coordinated register notification in Altinn. Please remember to add the main activity first, as this will decide which industrial code the organisation will be assigned.
Statistics Norway
The industrial codes are mainly meant to cover Statistics Norway’s (SSB) needs for statistics, and is determined by the Standard Industrial Classification. You can read more about the standard and the industrial codes on Statistics Norway’s website.
