Registered Norwegian and foreign hunters

The hunting year does not follow the calendar year; it starts
on 1 April and ends on 31 March the following year. The statistics
for the Norwegian Register of Hunters are therefore only preliminary.
As of 31 December 2003 more than 379 000 hunters had been
registered in the Norwegian Register of Hunters, 346 000 men
and 33 000 women. Close to 10 000 new hunters were registered
in 2003, around 8000 were men.
Anyone who has passed the hunting test is registered as a
new hunter. However, not all registered hunters practice their
hobby. Only half of the registered hunters paid the hunting
permit fee last year so they could hunt.

The number of registered foreign hunters in Norway also increased
in 2003 by 714 from the year before. At the end of the year
10 279 foreign nationals were registered in the Norwegian
Register of Hunters. Only 20 per cent of these paid the hunting
permit fee in 2003 and obtained the permit to hunt in Norway.
