The Register of Political Parties is principally a register
of the national political parties, but is also open to all
political parties which satisfy the criteria for registration.
The main purpose of the registration scheme is to give political
parties the opportunity to obtain exclusive rights to a party
name. The Register checks that no new party names are registered
that could be confused with a part name that is already registered
in the Register of Political Parties, and that the new party
name cannot be confused with ideological concepts that historically
and traditionally have been connected to other parties. It
must also not be possible to confuse new party names with
names of Sami political entities. Questions on Sami political
entities may be forwarded to The
Sami Parliament (Sametinget).
When a new party name has been registered, the Register of
Political Parties notifies all the other parties and the Sami
political entities, which may then lodge an appeal against
the registration if they believe it should not have been allowed.
An appeal must give the grounds for claiming that linguistically
the name might be confused with another name. Grounds must
also be given when claiming that the registration is in conflict
with ideological concepts that historically are linked to
other parties.
To be registered in the Register of Political Parties, a
party must also be registered in the Central Coordinating
Register for Legal Entities.
The Register of Political Parties contains information on
the party name, organization number, address and contact person/representative
as registered in the Central Coordinating Register for Legal
Entities. The Register of Political Parties also contains
information on the party's main board, which is the body that,
pursuant to legislation, represents the party in relation
to the election authorities. When preparing an election the
election authorities use the information registered in the
Register of Political Parties as of 31 March of the election
year.
