EMAS - Eco-Management and Audit Scheme - is a voluntary scheme
for environmental registration of business enterprises in
the EU. Norwegian business enterprises may also participate
in this scheme through the EEA Agreement. EMAS registration
comes under the Register of Business Enterprises at the Brønnøysund
Register Centre.
EMAS approval means that the business enterprise complies
with and exceeds the statutory requirements for environmental
activities. Being in the EMAS Register is a marketing advantage
for Norwegian companies aiming to compete on the European
market. In the future it is highly likely that European purchasing
managers will check suppliers against this list. EMAS companies
will also have higher credibility for lenders, investors and
the general public.
The Ministry of Environment has the main responsibility for
the EMAS scheme in Norway, with the Norwegian Pollution Control
Authority as the executive authority. Approved environmental
inspectors perform inspections and monitor environmental activities
in the companies. The Brønnøysund Register Centre
is in charge of approval and registration of business enterprises
that would like to join this scheme, and also coordinates
register information with the EU Register.
EMAS is an open register where all interested parties may
retrieve information about registered companies.
